Bonjour Mesdames et Messieurs, I live in Florida and have been taking photos of the most iconic cityscapes and landscapes for years.
This is more than just a workshop, it is also a way to discover the most beautiful things about Florida: the abundant warm sunshine, sunsets on the most beautiful beach, majestic live oak trees of Old Florida, the vast expanse of the Everglades, and the famous Art Deco area of South Beach Miami.
We will be spending time in these areas: Clearwater Beach, Sarasota, Everglades, and South Beach Miami.
This workshop will only have a limited number of participants. I really want to keep a small group so you can enjoy this experience to the fullest!
Florida has some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, and my home Clearwater Beach is one of the most iconic places to photograph them. We will be exploring the white sandy beach near Pier 60 to capture these dramatic skies and the sparkling clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This pier is one of the most beautiful piers in Florida.
Meet at our hotel in Clearwater Beach. Presentation and evaluation of what you would like to achieve in this workshop.
Walk along the white sandy beach near our hotel and Pier 60 during golden hour to find good compositions. Hear the waves, feel the sun, and enjoy your feet in the sand!
Take photos at the beach near Pier 60 from sunset to blue hour. We shoot together and I see how you compose and what camera setting you use to capture the pier, and coach you as needed. Dinner after photoshoot.
Experience the Old Florida landscape early Native Americans and Spanish explorers witnessed by exploring Myakka River State Park, one of Florida’s oldest and largest parks. The Myakka River flows through 58 square miles of the park, filled with arching palm trees and live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Drive through a canopy of live oaks and view the vast expanse of Myakka Lake surrounded by wildflower prairies, unspoiled wetlands, hammocks, and pinelands. Wildlife abounds here with alligators and turtles sunning themselves lazily along the water, and all kinds of water birds wading near the boardwalk. Learn how to photograph this natural landscape in black and white being inspired by famous Florida photographer Clyde Butcher.
Drive south to historic Venice (about 1.5 hour drive on bus)
Tour Clyde Butcher’s Gallery in Venice
Tour the gallery and darkroom of Clyde Butcher, a photographer in Florida known for his large format black and white images of Florida’s wilderness. He has been called the next Ansel Adams. Clyde lived in the Everglades and walked waist high in the swamps to capture film images using his 12” x 20” view camera, printing them up to 5’ x 9’. Walk through his darkroom and see “Big Bertha”, his 16 foot long enlarger that weighs 2,000 pounds. Learn Clyde’s photographic process and get inspired from his large prints of the Florida Everglades and Myakka River State Park.
Lunch at the popular local waterfront restaurants, Fins and Sharky’s, which sit right at the end of the Venice Fishing Pier on Venice Beach. This place has a fun tropical vibe with palm trees, tiki huts, white sandy beach, and incredible views of the Gulf of Mexico!
Drive to Myakka River State Park in Sarasota (about 40 minutes on bus)
Arrive before golden hour to scout shooting locations and experience the natural beauty of the park.
Take photos at Myakka River State Park from golden hour to sunset using inspiration from Clyde Butcher, finding strong compositions of trees and puffy clouds to create dramatic black and white photos. Now that we have covered the technical part, let’s go over what to wear. The weather in Florida is usually cool in the morning and warm later in the day during the month of February. So I would advise you to bring pretty light clothing but also warmer clothes just in case. We will be walking a lot during our photo hunting and exploration of Florida which is why comfortable shoes are important. The sun can be quite strong in Florida so a hat and sunscreen are very important. Long pants and bug spray can be handy out in nature. There will be a pool at the hotels, so bring a bathing suit if you want to swim. Be ready for an adventure as you capture the beaches, nature, and cityscapes of Florida!
I accept all level of experience in photography, but just make sure you have the gear needed; otherwise it will be no fun for you. If you are missing a lens or a ND filter don’t worry about it!
