Hello fellow San Francisco lovers and chasers of fog and golden light!
From the Golden Gate to the cable-car hills, San Francisco is one of the most photogenic cities on earth. Below are my favourite spots, each with a Google Maps link to the exact place I stood, the camera settings, and the time of day that makes it sing.

One quick tip: San Francisco lives by its light and its fog. Shoot the Golden Gate at blue hour, chase the Painted Ladies and the hills at golden hour, and embrace the fog rather than waiting it out — it is the city's signature.
📍 Baker Beach on Google Maps (37.7936, -122.4836)
Baker Beach is the spot for the postcard Golden Gate shot — the full sweep of the bridge rising from the headland, mirrored in the wet sand. Come back after dark and a long exposure turns the surf to mist while the bridge lights streak across the beach. And when the fog rolls in, do not pack up: the towers glow like embers in the murk for a frame nobody else gets.
Best time: Blue hour into night, and especially when the fog is in. A tripod is essential.

📍 Battery Spencer, Marin Headlands on Google Maps (37.8329, -122.4795)
Cross to the Marin side and climb to Battery Spencer for the other classic angle — looking back down the length of the bridge with the whole city skyline beyond. In spring, frame it through the wild orange and yellow flowers on the hillside for a burst of foreground colour.
Best time: Sunset, for warm light on the towers and the city behind.

📍 Alamo Square on Google Maps (37.7762, -122.4329)
The most famous row of Victorians in the world. From the slope of Alamo Square Park, the 'Painted Ladies' line up with the downtown skyline rising behind them — old and new San Francisco in one frame. The green lamp post on the path makes a perfect anchor.
Best time: Sunset, when the skyline behind catches the gold light.

📍 California St (Nob Hill) on Google Maps (37.7919, -122.4101)
Stand at the top of one of the steep California Street hills and shoot straight down — the cable-car tracks pull your eye all the way to the Bay Bridge in the distance, framed by the canyon of buildings. A slow shutter at dawn smooths the early traffic and lights.
Best time: Dawn into blue hour, before the hill fills with cars.

📍 Ferry Building / Embarcadero on Google Maps (37.7955, -122.3937)
The Ferry Building's clock tower anchors the waterfront. Shoot from a pier along the Embarcadero at sunset, with Coit Tower on the hill behind and the last light burning over the downtown skyline.
Best time: Sunset, from the piers just north or south of the building.

📍 California & Leavenworth, Nob Hill on Google Maps (37.7918, -122.4163)
San Francisco's fog is a gift. From the top of Nob Hill, a long lens compresses the steep streets into the wall of fog swallowing the Bay Bridge, and a lone figure becomes a tiny silhouette in the glow. Pure minimalist black-and-white.
Best time: A foggy morning, with a telephoto to compress the hills.

San Francisco rewards patience with the fog and an early alarm for the hills. One blue hour at Baker Beach, one foggy morning on Nob Hill, and one sunset at Alamo Square, and you will have captured the real soul of the city by the bay.
Happy shooting!
